West Town, Chicago, Illinois
325 sf / Renovation
Completed 2020 -
This incredibly odd building - a long-vacant commercial space with a footprint of just 165 square feet - has avoided the wrecking ball and been reimagined as a chic urban tiny home. The main floor was raised by 28” to take advantage of an existing crawlspace, resulting in a split-level plan where the light-filled living space is stacked over a cozy bedroom and full-size bath. Interior divisions are minimized, style is emphasized, and every inch accounted for. A bold blue paint job completes the makeover, helping this 325 square foot building punch above its weight and visually anchor the street corner.
Adaptability was key to the process, as the typical hurdles of any historic renovation process - “wait, this brick wall is 1” thicker than we thought it was?!” - became amplified in such a small space. This charming, unique piece of Chicago’s architectural history has become a minor celebrity in the neighborhood, and is one of the few true “tiny homes” in the Second City.
