Via Chicago has been selected as a pre-approved Technical Assistance (TA) provider for the Neighborhood Opportunity Fund. The NOF finances commercial and cultural projects in neighborhoods that lack private investment, using revenue generated from downtown development.
Financing can't solve everything, though. The NOF recognizes that these business owners need more than just cash - they need design partners they can trust. After narrowing down a pool of 144 firms, DPD has put together a list of 9 vetted, experienced, pre-approved local architects who can help entrepreneurs navigate common pain points in the permitting and construction process.
What?
The Neighborhood Opportunity Fund (NOF) takes revenue generated by high-end, downtown developments, and uses those funds in underserved commercial corridors around Chicago. Small business owners can apply to the fund to help pay for new construction or renovation of their existing business. The financial grants can be used for hard construction costs - such as storefront window upgrades or a roof replacement - architectural and engineering fees, and other soft costs associated with the work.
Where?
Projects must be located in an Eligible Commercial Corridor. Residential, industrial projects, and places of worship are not eligible for NOF funding.
How?
Both New Construction and Renovation projects can receive grants of up to 50% of their total project cost, with typical projects receiving $250,000 or less.
As a small business ourselves - based at Armitage & Kedzie, on the edge of Logan Square and Humboldt Park - we have an acute understanding of the financial stress and logistical hurdles involved with renovating your business.
We have extensive experience in the adaptive re-use of historic buildings, and a deep appreciation for the emotional and economic impact these important structures have on their surrounding neighborhood. As young Chicagoans we are passionate about preserving the truly local hubs that give Chicago neighborhoods their distinct energy and personality. Via Chicago understands the ups-and-downs of operating a small business - and the hair-pulling frustration of navigating city bureaucracy, for the uninitiated. We are always looking for ways to connect with fellow entrepreneurs on a personal level, while also leveraging our design skills and city-savvy to foster economic growth for their business thru the power of good design.
