Architect Notes
Building on the success of their first joint-location, Square Roots and Gordon Food Service recently inaugurated a second farm campus near Grand Rapids, Michigan. Utilizing a series of horizontally - and now, vertically - stacked shipping containers, the farm is able to operate on an even smaller footprint than the first complex. The deployment of this farm was a testament to the flexibility that is built into the design and overall farming model, with building modules initially intended for an East Coast site rapidly quickly re-routed to Michigan when it emerged as a more logical location during the heart of the Covid-19 pandemic. Design concepts, technological breakthroughs, and day-to-day workflows developed in this new multi-story model will be used to construct higher-and-higher farms on a consistently small physical footprint.
